Well. That was lovely.

I always welcome an afternoon spent in London and that is exactly what the volume 1 of Emma m Lion series affords. A quick 100 page novella that introduces the humorous and witty Emma M Lion and company.

Edit: rereading this book, I’d raise the star rating for nostalgia’s sake. I also caught a lot of references to some foreshadowing of what’s to come in the next volumes that I didn’t pick up the first time as I sought my bearings.

My reread has confirmed my stance that volumes 1 and 2 should be read as a single book. At the end of volume 1 there are still key players that need be introduced. Together, both volumes total 250 pages, making it good length novel, if a bit shorter than average. If read this way, the reader will meet all the main characters and get a good sense of the developing plot by volume 2’s conclusion.

As these are Emma’s journals, each volume picks up right where the last stopped and I love the continuity of the timeline! I’ve heard amazing things about the audiobooks, but this is one series that I do not plan to listen to the audio. They are so easy to pick up and read, some of the journal entries are only a sentence or two long, and I have all the characters and their voices solidified in my head.

This is a series I will always recommend to anyone, especially the physical book as Emma will make you want to scribble in the margins.
