The perfect amount of political espionage and witty characters!

I read this book with the Agatha Christie stand alone book club that I’m co-hosting with two friends and immediately loved the humor, sarcasm, and international intrigue of the plot. The majority of the cast of characters were endearing and each a vibe in their own right.

I listened to the audio while reading the physical book which helped me keep track of the plotting and characters. A lot of the feedback on this book from book club was confusion at the beginning with the political aspect of the book. I was able to keep track of it all which was a fun added layer to the plot. If you’re looking for more political mysteries by Agatha Christie, I also really love The Big Four!

While this is a stand alone, it has some characters that pop up again in other novels! The charming Bundle and her father are in The Seven Dials Mystery along with Superintendent Battle. Battle appears in a few other books, one of which is a top favorite of mine: Cards on the Table, a Hercule Poirot novel! The cast of characters in this book really made it for me!

This title is very different from her other books. She’s playing around with ridiculous characters, humor, and international and political plotting. The Secret of Chimneys was her 6th book to publish and I personally think it is so fun to see her flesh out these themes so early in her writing career!

I am so surprised that this may be one of my absolute favorite Agatha novels….? Am I crazy? Maybe. I had such a fun ride reading this 👏🏼
