- Content 🤔 some violence

Pattou’s writing style is captivating and calming to read. The fantasy realm operates as its own separate entity, while keeping a firm foothold in the real world. I loved the Norse mythology woven through the story, and once the adventure sets in, the story takes off.

East is a great fantasy book for a reader who is new to, or hasn’t fully dived into, the fantasy genre yet. Additionally, a lot of the chapters are short, which makes for my preferred reading experience. Its a true YA! I love when I find YA books that read as a true YA. This is one I had to own for my shelves for my girls to read when they get to the YA age range! Would absolutely recommend this book to anyone.

Here are a couple quotes from the book that stood out to me while reading:

Glowing. The moon through a doorway. Breath hard in my throat. Heart full to burst. The moon through a doorway. And in its light… Hope.

I recalled my previous ocean crossing–the simple, dreamlike trip through the sea, wrapped in a sealskin and carried like a baby in the mouth of a white bear. And I realized how much more complicated life is without the benefit of magic. Rubbing linseed oil into my blistered hands, I thought wistfully of how magic lets you skip over the steps of things. that is what makes it so appealing.
