This could’ve been a short story… That’s it. That’s the review 😅 just kidding I’ll flesh it out a bit for you.
I’ve finally found a Poirot that was slowwww. This truly felt like Poirot being bored in retirement and grasping at straws to fill his time. And I was also bored. I think Christie was truly leaning into the characters of this one. There were a lot of in depth character interviews between Poirot and the players involved. At around the halfway mark I thought the book was ready to wrap up but it just kept going. Like I said, could’ve been a short story in my opinion.
The only redeeming factor in this book was (much to my surprise) Hastings. I haven’t liked him much up to this point in the series, but I was finally able to identify with his character getting drug around by Poirot for seemingly no reason. Also, the dog throughout the plot is personified by Hastings and I loved that. It was a fun little detail throughout an otherwise dull plot.
These are just my personal opinions, I still enjoyed this because, hello, it’s Agatha. And I hope someone reading this will disagree and absolutely love this book! I think readers who enjoy slow paced, character driven, cozy mysteries will appreciate this plot more than I did.
