Dracula surprised me in the best way!

I absolutely loved the epistolary format of this classic. It’s presented via letters, journal entries, telegrams and other forms of written correspondence. I’ve recently become more and more enthralled by this form of storytelling.

It was very different than what we view as a modern vampire book. There was good v. evil and the reader could easily distinguish between dark v. light. Additionally the characters frequently beseech God for help against the cursed and undead vampire figures. It makes the crucifix feel more true and powerful than just a watered down symbol that’s used today in vampire lore.

Additionally, there was no sexualized instances when referring to the vampires. Dracula was actually viewed as an unintelligent personality a few times by the human characters which I found interesting. The group of friends/found family was endearing, I wish the reader had more back story as to how they met and their previous escapades.

Overall I was pleasantly surprised by the storytelling, points of view, and the way Dracula was portrayed as a twisted/cursed figure that God’s creation should be rid of.

I listened to this on audio. There are two different versions included with an Audible subscription, from what I’ve heard, I think both are successful renditions.
