I’ll be the first to admit that I tend to overrate books. I just love a good story. Still, its rare for me to find a genre defining read. A 6 star read if you will. A brain altering read that I just can’t get enough of. Crime and Punishment is that kind of book for me!

I’ve loved classics (and Russian literature) for many years, but this is the first classic I’ve read that falls in the psychological crime thriller genre. As a long time thriller reader, it feels monumental having reading a classic in this genre. Dostoevsky not only takes his main character on a psychological ride, but the reader as well.

The entire book feels like a fever dream and I read it with a fast, manic two days. The rich themes throughout the plot are begging me to sink my teeth into them, I truly want to start the book right back over to study the ideas that Dostoevsky presents, like right v. wrong, splitting of the soul, carrying your burdens, superiority complexes, and many more. I could also spend hours just on character studies and how he uses them to further these core themes in the narrative.

I’m still chewing on this book, so this review is very much my half-formed thoughts. I talk more in depth about my reading experience and the themes that stood out to me in my reading vlog on youtube:

I did an immersive reading experience for this book, both reading it with my eyes as well as listening to the audiobook at the same time. I listened to the audiobook narrated by Will Poulter and it is fantastic, he did an incredible job with different voices and accents and reading with conviction. It’s also the same translation as the physical copy that I have! The translation I read is by Constance Garnet.

*I think there’s just mild language?! honestly I was so engrossed in this story that I really didn’t notice those kinds of details throughout the book.

Crime and Punishment has forced its way into my heart, so much so that I had to give my beautiful physical copy an extra special edition feel. Adding these book foils to the cover was just the thing. They are so simple and easy to use on books, journals, and kindle cases. The options are limitless!
