21 Read Aloud Books for Kindergarten and First Grade

I don’t know what it is about buying new curriculum and school supplies, but it makes me so excited for a new homeschool year! My children’s ages are currently 6, 5, and 3. Our two oldest are only 15 months apart and I’m combining their Kindergarten and First Grade curriculum with Heart of Dakota’s Little Hearts for His Glory.

While I would love to spend time going through our entire curriculum, what I’m most excited about are the read alouds! Most of the titles that came with this curriculum I had never encountered before and are gorgeously illustrated, which makes me look forward to reading them even more! We are a big read aloud family and my children have already developed a love for reading that I wasn’t quite expecting yet. Because of this, I’ll also be sharing additional classical literature I plan to add into our homeschool read aloud list.

You can listen to me talk about all the books on this list!

Homeschool Curriculum Picks

Before we dive into the read alouds, here’s a look at the resources we are using for curriculum this year:
Little Hearts for His Glory from Heart of Dakota

Why I like it:
– Created for a range of ages
– Christian based
– Open-and-go (no lesson planning!)
– I loved their pre-k curriculum: Little Hands to Heaven
– Easy to take out or add in and adjust to your day-to-day

Resources we are using for the main subjects (most of these come included with Little Hearts for His Glory, I’ve noted the resources I’ve subbed in with an *asterisk*):
– Math: Math with Confidence Kindergarten
– Phonics/Reading: *Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons
– Bible: 101 Favorite Stories from the Bible & *The Biggest Story Bible Storybook
– History: History for Little Pilgrims & History Stories for Children by John Wayland & Heart of Dakota Visual History Set
– Science: The World God Made by Edward J Shewan
– Other: I basically purchased the entire curriculum of Little Hearts for His Glory, so you can see all the resources we will be using on Heart of Dakota’s website!

Read Aloud Supplementation: Classics

My children are the type to ask to read a chapter book and want to read the entire thing in one sitting. With this in mind, I expect us to zoom through the read aloud list above. I anticipate needing to supplement for further reading and plan to do so with classics! My children have already been introduced to children’s classics through multiple avenues and I hope to read aloud a few of the full unabridged stories to them this year from the following list:

Unabridged Classics:
– Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll
– The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling
– A Little Princess by Frances Hodges Burnett

Looking at all of these books on our homeschool shelf has made me start viewing our other children’s books differently. We have a lot of children’s books and some are just inherently better than others. Whether its the illustration style or the messaging within the book, adding this rich selection of children’s literature to our home has me wanting to go through and donate some of our existing books!

I hope this list is helpful for you. I would love to hear in the comments your favorite read aloud title, I am always looking for new books to add to our shelves or check for at the library!
